Understanding the rules and mechanisms that govern the behaviour of cells from fertilisation to the mature organism constitutes an intriguing and important challenge. Intriguing, because the events of development are extraordinary in their beauty and complexity. Important, because advances in this area will generate a new wave of medical and commercial applications.
